Welcome to the RSNZ Manawatu Branch

For the promotion and advancement of science and technology in New Zealand.

The Manawatu Branch of the Royal Society of New Zealand is a regional constituent organisation of the RSNZ. Our aim is to publicise science and technology and provide interesting and topical talks for our members and the public of the Manawatu. All our talks are free and the public are invited to attend.

RSNZ Manawatu has active links with  the Manawatu Branches of the: Geological Society of New Zealand, Institute of Professional Engineers of New Zealand, New Zealand Institute of Chemistry as well as Massey University, Te Manawa (the science centre and Manawatu museum), the Crown Research Institutes based at based on the Fitzherbert West Campus and the those on the Massey's Turitea Campus.

Services provided:

  1. Regular public meetings held in the Science Centre's lecture room (usually on the 3rd Tuesday of the month).
  2. A forum for discussing and disseminating research, science and technology.
  3. A monthly newsletter containing details of meetings.
  4. Assistance with the Manawatu Science Fair.
  5. The Manawatu Lecture
  6. Electronic notification of meetings to anyone who is interested in receiving such information .
  7. Nominations for RSNZ Awards.
The membership fee is $20 (students may join as associate members for $5).  If you would like to join RSNZ Manawatu, please fill in the form at the end of this  page and submit it.

Lecture Programme for 2007 [ Next Meeting]

All visitors are welcome to attend these public lectures. Unless stated otherwise, meetings are held at the Te Manawa (Science Centre and Manawatu Museum, 396 Main Street, Palmerston North) lecture room starting at 7:30pm.  Prior to the lecture a dinner is normally held to welcome the speaker.  Members and friends are invited to the dinner stating at 6:00pm.  The dinner is held at at Moxies (81 George Street) within walking distance of Te Manawa.  Bookings are essential - for information about the dinner venue contact  Dr. Gregor Yeates   YeatesG@landcare.cri.nz or Dr Greg Arnold arnoldg@landcareresearch.co.nz

Tuesday, 17 July at 7:30pm - "HAPPY 300TH BIRTHDAY MR FLOWER POWER" to be presented by Professor Judith Kinnear, was privileged to participate in the celebrations of the Tercentenary of the birth of Carl Linnaeus and the Gotland excursion. Her talk will provide an outline of Linnaeus - naturalist, medico, scientist, teacher, traveller and writer - and will illustrate aspects of his travels on the island of Gotland. Abstract>>

Tuesday, 18 September at 7:30pm - Peter Sarjeant (Director of Exhibitions, Te Manawa) and Nicola Jennings (Team Leader Art at Te Manawa) talk about the da Vinci exhibition. Abrief introduction to the life and career of Leonardo da Vinci followed by a“virtual tour” behind the scenes look at Te Manawa’s presentation of the Da Vinci Machines exhibition. Tuesday, 16 October at 7:30pm - "WHEN IS A PLACEBO EFFECT NOT AN EFFECT? WHAT IS THE RELEVANCE OF THE PLACEBO EFFECT TO COMPLEMENTARY MEDICINE?" to be presented by Dr Richard Wigley, Consultant Rheumatologist, Palmerston North. Tuesday, 27 November at 7:30pm - AGM followed by the 2007 Manawatu Lecture. Prof. Mike Crozier (president Geographic Society; Victoria University) will speak on landslides.

Science Café at Te Manawa [ next Meeting ]

The Science Café is an informative, relaxed environment where issues in science can be discussed and debated. Each session starts with a brief presentation by a speaker. What follows is the opportunity to quiz and debate, agree and oppose, postulate and ponder the topics raised while enjoying a coffee or two.

It’s all about socialising, relaxing and chewing over some of today’s science. All welcome on the first Thursday of every month @ 6.30pm @ Te Manawa

Membership is open to any person who is interested in the objectives of RSNZ Manawatu Branch. No scientific or professional qualification is necessary.

If you would like to join the Manawatu Branch of Royal Society you can either:

Royal Society Awards & Honours

The Royal society of New Zealand recognises and encourages achievement in a broad range of scientific and technological areas (including social, engineering, applied and technological sciences). The society manages the granting of many different categories of awards, honours and medals. The Manawatu Branch encourages members to propose suitable candidates for these awards.
